Share some personal information about yourself. What defines you? What are you passionate about?
I am 43 years old, have been happily married for 18 years, and have 2 awesome children. In addition to loving and caring for my family, I get to work in women’s ministry at my church, encouraging and equipping women to joyfully fulfill their God-given roles.
After having a scare with skin cancer last summer, I was introduced to the premium skin care line Rodan+Fields, for whom I now am a consultant. Check out my website: rachaeloverton.myRandF.com
What motivates you to tackle your fitness goals?
What motivates me now to stay fit is very different from what motivated me when I was younger. I battled body image and eating issues for a long time, so nearly everything I did- fitness included- revolved around that. After realizing I have been given this body to take care of and to use, staying healthy and strong so I can do the things I am called to do is what drives me. I, also, want to be a fantastic role model for my teenage daughter and preteen son.
What has been your proudest fitness accomplishment to date?
In my 20s and 30s I competed in many running races and triathlons. BUT, my biggest accomplishment was doing my first (and only- so far) bikini competition at the age of 43. The way my body felt, functioned, and looked was nearly indescribable. While training, my nutrition plan (and the need for planning) inspired my husband to make some changes. I really think we will keep living a more balanced, healthy, and happy lifestyle together.
What do you love most about the fitness lifestyle and being in shape?
Besides knowing that I am taking care of the body God has given me, I love that having fitness as a lifestyle, has allowed me to make many special friendships. Getting and staying in shape can be such a wonderful social outlet. Having people along side you to challenge and encourage you is important
What’s been the hardest obstacle to overcome in your path to reaching your goals?
The hardest obstacle to overcome in my path to reaching my goals is eating clean. To me, sugar is like a drug. I really struggle with staying away from those sweets! (but when I do stay away from them, I feel so much better, physically, mentally, and emotionally.)
Tell us about your future goals and dreams, relating to fitness or otherwise.
I want to continue to stay strong, lean, active, and hard working. I plan to have a joy-filled and adventurous future!
What’s your favorite “clean” meal or food item? List as many as you like!
My favorite “clean” food items are:
1. spaghetti squash with a splash of olive oil and salt/pepper- the texture feels starchy and the taste is so satisfying
2. Oatmeal with a packet of stevia and a dash of cinnamon- once I cut out processed sugars, having this carb is a treat.
3. Syntax Nectar Chocolate Truffle protein powder mixed with almond milk, almond butter, and ice- tastes like ice cream! A great night time snack!
Hands down— gluten free pizza, loaded with veggies and sausage, followed by carmel corn or a nice piece of chocolate.
What type of training do you like best?
I love cardio (indoor biking and running) and have learned to like weight training, specifically, giant sets and metabolic training.
What kind of music helps motivate you in the gym?
variety with a good beat
What’s the best piece of advice you can offer someone who’s looking to get in shape or reach her fitness goals?
Get a buddy! You and your friend(s) can hold each other accountable, encourage one another, and celebrate your successes together.
